Gatlinburg Spur lane closures to delay Great Smoky Mountains travelers
The section of U.S. Highway 441 known as the Gatlinburg Spur will have single-lane closures beginning Sept. 28 and continuing through the beginning of October while crews complete essential maintenance, according to the National Park Service. Drivers should prepare for traffic delays on this busy stretch. Throughout the year, millions drive along The Spur, which connects Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. The 4.2-mile stretch is one of the busiest routes in the area, with an average of 40,000 vehicles per day traveling the road during the summer season, according to the park. When will the Spur have single-lane closures? 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 28-29 | Northbound lane closures are scheduled 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 30-Oct. 1 | Southbound lane closures are scheduled Visitors traveling during these times might experience traffic delays. Maryville officials discuss e-bike limits, possible hotel development during work session
Maryville bike riders beware! This October, the spookiest thing may not be the ghouls and specters lurking in the autumn shadows, it could be how many teeth a new e-bike ordinance receives. Although most attendees left after the Flock camera presentation and impromptu community forum, Maryville city officials still had a bevy of business items to preview at the Sept. 18 work session. An update to the city’s code addressing e-bikes and other off-highway vehicles was among items that could make immediate impacts. E-bikes, or electric bikes, come equipped with a motor and battery that can help the cyclist generate extra power and go farther with less exertion than a traditional bicycle. Historically, they’ve been better received in European and Asian countries, particularly the Netherlands, Germany and China, where biking as a primary transportation mode is more common and culturally acceptable. For decades, adoption in the U.S., according to a research analysis funded, in part, by the Department of Transportation, has largely been confined to older and richer audiences, or those with adaptive needs. The 2020s turned that expectation on its head. “Global e-bike sales were estimated to total 30 million unities between 2020 and 2023, reflecting widespread availability and

Park(ing) Day Returns to Reimagine Public Space
Cars are useful. They take us where we want to go, whenever we want to go there. Wow. But their utilitarianism diminishes substantially when they’re just sitting there: large, immobile hunks of metal, plastic, rubber and glass taking up space, quietly waiting to ferry us to our next destination.
