Monroe, La. (KTVE/KARD) — The brooms came out last night when the Louisiana Tech University Diamonds Dogs made the final trip to Lou St. Amant Field this season in the I-20 series by closing the deal on a series sweep of the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks with heavy firepower at the plate.

The Bulldogs got out to a fast start with an opening leadoff homer by Dalton Davis to begin the game on the perfect foot, and they stayed hot throughout the match with Will Safford earning two rbi’s in the top of the second inning, scoring Kasten Furr and Grant Comeaux.

Cole McConnell kept his foot on the accelerator with his 14th homer over the wall, and after a couple more runs it looked like the Warhawks was down in the water trailing 8-0.

The Warhawks soon created some traction with Matt Abshire flying a home run over the fence and they continued to fight putting three more runs on the board, but the Bulldogs eventually close out the 8-4 victory. Wednesday morning Louisiana Tech Baseball head Coach Lane Burroughs says he likes where his team currently sits and how well they are playing among the conference.

“Nine games left, they’re all conference games, and we’ve taken care of business in our mid-weeks and put ourselves in position to win the league. I mean that’s where we are, and I don’t want us to get too far ahead of ourselves,” said Burroughs. “I’m proud of our guys right now I think we’ve gotten seven straight mid-week wins. I think since the LSU loss and taking care of business there and ever since we’ve come back from Arizona, I think we’re 7-1 or 8-1 something like that and we’ve played really good so yeah, it’s a lot of baseball left to be played but we’ve got ourselves in position to make a run and that’s all you can ask.”

The Bulldogs now go on the road to face New Mexico State to gear up for the final stretch of the season.
