I-80 Lane Closures in Roxbury as Bridge Project Advances

ROXBURY, NJ - Lane closures on Route 80 westbound will occur tonight through mid-morning on Saturday as construction crews gear up to replace the highway's bridges over Howard Boulevard, said the state Department of Transportation (DOT).
It said the closures will begin at about 8 p.m. tonight, (Friday, May 3) and continue until about 10 a.m. May 4. The center and right lanes on Route 80 westbound are scheduled to be closed beginning near milepost 32 until past the bridge over Howard Boulevard, said the DOT.
"At least one lane will be maintained overnight," said the state. "The closure is necessary to install a construction barrier and re-stripe the roadway to implement a traffic shift."
The DOT said that three westbound lanes of the interstate will be restored and shifted to the right, using the shoulder as a travel lane, by 10 a.m. Saturday.
"A temporary bridge is being constructed between the existing eastbound and westbound bridges to maintain three lanes of traffic in each direction throughout construction," explained the state. "When it is completed later this summer, eastbound traffic will be shifted onto the temporary median bridge to allow for the demolition and reconstruction of the I-80 eastbound bridge over Howard Boulevard."
The $65.4 million project, funded by the federal government, entails replacing the existing bridges carrying Route 80 over Howard Boulevard. The current bridges "are in poor condition," said the DOT.
"Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80 and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard," it noted. "The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance."
Additionally, the project will include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, said the state. It said ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks will be built, with sidewalks extended to the NJ Transit Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility.
The project is expected to be complete in summer 2027, the DOT said.
"The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors," it stressed. "Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information."
