State police: Monroe County jail inmate died Feb. 4 by suicide; investigation ongoing

A Monroe County Correctional Facility inmate’s death has been reported as a suicide by Pennsylvania State Police more than a month later.

According to state police, a female inmate at the Monroe County Correctional Facility took her own life by jumping from a second story structure on the morning of Feb. 4. The manner of death was made public via a Stroudsburg barracks press release on Friday, March 22.

The victim was not named, but was listed as being a 43-year-old woman from Ronkonkoma, New York.

Monroe County District Attorney Mike Mancuso reported the incident on his Facebook page on Feb. 7, writing that she "suffered fatal injuries when she fell from the an upper tier."

"She was pronounced dead hours later at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Pocono. Detective Mario Orlando of my office along with members of the Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death. Coroner Tom Yanac has ordered an autopsy," Mancuso wrote.

Monroe County District Attorney’s Office Chief Detective Eric Kerchner, Monroe County Correctional Facility Warden Garry Haidle and Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac all said Monday that an investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Community Services and Public Information Officer for PSP Troop N, Trooper Anthony Petroski III, was not available for comment on Monday afternoon.
