Join the Rome community for an opportunity to see and experience the neighborhood through Jane’s Walk, a free, citizen-led walking experience happening Saturday May 4 at 9 a.m. The fourth annual event will consist of a two mile walk in the South Rome area.

The walk is a family friendly event hosted by TRED and the Rome-Floyd Planning Department as well as local historian Russell McClanahan. This year, Jane’s Walk will start at the mausoleum parking lot on Branham Avenue, go up South Broad Street to Anna K. Davie Elementary School, then head to the Mount Aventine Jewish Cemetery and return to the mausoleum.

Attendees can expect to walk and talk to their neighbors and to learn about the area up close and personal.

Transportation and Trails Planner Julia Harris, said, “It gives people a chance to walk and see things you wouldn’t see if you drive. By getting out and walking, you can explore this neighborhood.”

The walk will also be a chance for people to learn about aspects of their community they hadn’t thought about before, share stories about their neighborhood and connect with their neighbors through walking.

“We’re introducing people to historical perspectives and thinking about how things ended up here,” said Rome City Commissioner Harry Brock, who also is president of TRED. “It’s interesting to see how things have evolved and developed in this area.”

Jane’s Walk is a nationwide event to honor writer, urbanist and activist Jane Jacobs, who took a community based approach to city building. Jane’s Walk always takes place the first weekend in May to honor Jacob’s birthday.

“Jane Jacobs was never a trained planner, urbanist or architect, she was somebody who had a passion for her neighborhood,” Brock said.

Participants should arrive ready to walk with adequate shoes and a water bottle, and be prepared to share stories about the area if they want.

To RSVP to the event, call Julia Harris at 706-236-5024 or email her at jharris@romega.us .
