Rome Water Department Responds To Concerns At Ashland Park Homes

The Rome Water Department is reporting that its drinking water is safe after recent concerns raised by tenants at Ashland Park Homes.

Upon receiving reports of illness and concerns regarding E. coli bacteria in the water supply, Water and Sewer Division Director John Boyd initiated inquiries into the matter, according to a City of Rome press release.

“The Rome City Water Department assures residents that stringent water treatment protocols and continuous monitoring are in place to mitigate such risks and ensure the delivery of clean and safe drinking water,” the press release stated.

Collaborating with concerned parties, including residents and staff at Ashland Park Homes, the water department deployed staff to conduct on-site assessments and address the reported concerns.

Some tenants had expressed concerns after a person had recently been hospitalized with E. coli-related issues. The bacteria can pose health risks if present in untreated water or contaminated food.

During the on-site assessment, the water departments’ supervisor of water treatment, Curtis Vann, monitored chlorine levels in the water supply. They determined that a reading of 1.39 mg/L at the site was well within acceptable limits. They also distributed copies of this year’s Consumer Confidence Report to provide information about water quality to residents.

They also conducted further assessments at the Ga. 53 sampling point to check the broader water supply for the area.

Those tests showed a chlorine reading of 0.92 mg/L at that site and coliform bacteria at that location, which they also deemed acceptable and an indicator that disease-causing organisms are not present in the water supply.
