DeKalb County’s oldest living veteran honored on Memorial Day
AUBURN, Ind. (WANE)— 101-year-old Ellen Bates was honored at Auburn’s annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday for her service in the military as a nurse. Bates was born in Auburn in 1922, before traffic signals, televisions and sliced bread were invented. She graduated high school in 1940. Then, she went to St. Joseph School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, graduating in 1944. Upon graduating, she reported to Fort Knox in Kentucky for basic training. The next year, she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse’s Corps and finished her time serving at Ashford General Hospital in West Virginia.
