    HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: D-B edges Cherokee in finale

    KINGSPORT — Cherokee clawed its way back from a 7-3 deficit to put the pressure on 4A Dobyns-Bennett on Saturday, but the Tribe made the plays when it counted to hold on for an 8-7 nonconference win.

    The Chiefs racked a quartet of D-B pitchers for nine hits in the game. Parker Travis finished 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs. Cole Putnal had an RBI double in the seventh to close the gap to one run, but the Chiefs couldn’t push the other run across to extend the game.

    Clay Wagoner, Keaton Lawson, Manning Brooks, Gage Adkins, Gavin Housewright and Jacob Brooks each had one hit for the Chiefs.

    Adkins took the loss on the mound, giving up seven runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and a strikeout in three innings. Noah Hunter pitched three innings in relief, holding the Indians to one run on four hits with one strikeout. Cherokee committed three errors.

    West Ridge 5, Volunteer 1

    CHURCH HILL — The Volunteer baseball team closed out the regular season with a 5-1 nonconference loss to 4A West Ridge on Saturday at Joey Seaver Field.

    Isaiah Bowery went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Volunteer. Aden Parsons also had two hits for Volunteer. Leadoff hitter Brycen Feagins had the only other hit for the Falcons.

    Kade Oliver earned the win for the Wolves, scattering the five hits over seven innings of work in the complete-game victory. He walked one and struck out four.

    Gavin Hickernell took the loss for Volunteer. He gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits, walked five and struck out five.

    HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

    Volunteer 2, Claiborne 1

    NEW TAZEWELL — Volunteer scored two runs in the third inning and held on down the stretch to win a pitching duel 2-1 over Claiborne on Friday in the final Twin Lakes Conference softball game of the regular season.

    Zetta Smith went 2 for 3 and drove in a run. Jenna Thomas also had a hit and an RBI for the Lady Falcons, who outhit the Lady Bulldogs 8-3 in the contest. Jayden Ford had three hits and Haley Russell two for Volunteer.

    Elise Bous threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts to pick up the win for Volunteer. Rylee Smith threw 1 2/3 innings with a walk and a strikeout to earn the save.

    The Lady Falcons secured the No. 3 seed in the District 2-3A softball tournament, which gets underway Thursday, May 2, at Claiborne High School. According to the latest bracket, Volunteer will now face No. 3 seed Greeneville on Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. The two teams split during the regular season. The winner will advance to the winners’ bracket semifinal on Monday, May 6, at 5:30 p.m., while the loser faces an elimination game at 7:30 p.m.

    Grainger 7, Cherokee 1

    RUTLEDGE — Grainger’s Lady Grizzlies scored six runs in the third inning to beat Cherokee 7-1 on Friday in the final game of the regular season. The Lady Chiefs committed nine errors in the District 2-3A makeup game.

    Alison Byrd earned the win for Grainger. She limited the Lady Chiefs to four hits and one unearned run in seven innings with one walk and eight strikeouts. Kennedy Dishner took the loss for Cherokee, though all seven Grainger runs were unearned. Dishner surrendered six hits, walked two and struck out two in six innings.

    Dishner, Kaylee Cinnamon, Rachel Young and Kasie Bowman each had one hit for Cherokee.

    Cherokee, the No. 5 seed, will have to travel to Claiborne on Thursday, May 2, for the District 2-3A tournament play-in game. The winner will advance to face top-seeded Grainger on Friday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. The loser will be eliminated.
