ROCKY HILL, Conn. (WTNH) — Vietnam Veterans received the honor and recognition that many believe was long overdue in a special ceremony in Rocky Hill.

“We are so very grateful for your sacrifice,” said Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, (D) Connecticut.

Among the veterans was Ted Graziani, who not only served in Vietnam but also authored legislation as a state lawmaker to establish this special day in Connecticut.

We were demonized. We were vilified. We were shunned,” said Graziani.

For many attendees like Dee Smith, the annual ceremony serves as an opportunity to reconnect with fellow veterans and reflect on their shared experiences.

“It’s always a pleasure to be here,” said Smith. “Talk with some of my brothers and sisters.”

Vietnam veterans have played a crucial role in raising awareness about the mental toll of war, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ensuring that future generations of soldiers receive the support they need.

“Today’s also a day where we think about those who didn’t come home,” said Bysiewicz.

Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz took a moment to honor the memory of the 58,000 troops who lost their lives in the Vietnam War, including 614 from Connecticut.

“We’re lucky to be here,” said Vietnam Veteran Ronald Catania. “My best friend from Rocky Hill died in Vietnam. So we are very lucky to be home.”

Connecticut’s recognition of “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” in 2010 was a significant step forward, with subsequent federal acknowledgment through the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act.

“Things like this have made everything a lot better,” said Smith.
