As the spring sports seasons hit the backstretch, and postseasons start to kick in, the stars come out, and you have to decide who should be the Rockford Register Star High School Athlete of the Week for April 29-May 4.

The voting at rrstar.com ends at noon on Friday. You can email Jay Taft at jtaft@rrstar.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who can be placed on the ballot.

Gabriella Davis, Lutheran track and field

This Lutheran freshman won the 100-meter dash at last week's Big Northern Conference girls track and field meet in 13.04, and she led her 4x100 relay squad to a win in 51.64 and took second in the 200 in 26.59. She is going to be one to watch at sectionals this week and, most likely, at state next week.

Caden De Jong and JC Herrera, Freeport tennis

De Jong and Herrera won the No. 1 doubles title, edging Belvidere North’s Ben Leake and Jack Stolp 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) to help Freeport win its first NIC-10 team title in tennis in 29 years.

    Dani Franz, Hononegah softball

Franz was 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and a double, five RBIs and two runs scored as Hononegah steamrolled Jefferson 15-0 last Wednesday. The senior catcher was hitting .431 with 28 RBIs entering this week. Hononegah (20-1, 12-0 NIC-10) is at Harlem this Thursday and hosts Belvidere North next Wednesday in the last two key NIC-10 showdowns this season.

    Jordan Hanserd, Guilford softball

Hanserd, the Guilford senior pitcher and third baseman, went 6-for-10 with three doubles and two RBIs last week against some tough NIC-10 competition in Belvidere North, Hononegah and Belvidere. Hanserd was hitting .475 entering this week.

    Cortlyn Hefty, Belvidere North soccer

Hefty posted 11 shots on goal, scoring once but keeping the pressure on throughout as the Blue Thunder climbed to 16-1 on the season with a 3-1 win over Hononegah last Thursday. Headed into the final week of the regular season, the Blue Thunder's only loss this season came to Boylan and Hefty is at a state-leading 52 goals.

Essence Horton-Graves, Auburn track and field

Horton-Graves, now a senior at Auburn, easily won her third straight NIC-10 title in the 100-meter dash during the conference meet last Thursday, and she also led the two sprint relays to victories and placed second in the 200 dash. Auburn and Horton-Graves will take part in the Huntley Sectional this week.

    Braden Monson, Hononegah tennis

Monson, a sophomore, repeated as NIC-10 champion in No. 1 singles, beating Auburn’s Austin Altangerel 6-2, 6-2.

    Braylon Kilduff, Byron baseball

Kilduff threw a two-hit shutout in Byron’s 10-0, five-inning victory over Dixon. That gives Byron (13-1 Big Northern) a two-game lead over defending four-time champion Dixon (11-3) in the conference race with four games to play.

    Kendra Kingsby, Milledgeville softball

Kingsby went 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored in Milledgeville’s 16-6 NUIC South victory over Forreston. Kingsby also pitched three hitless innings, striking out seven. Also last week, in losses to Dakota and Eastland and in another win over Forreston, Kingsby was a combined 8-for-10 in those three games with a homer, five more RBIs and six more runs scored.

    Deborah Schmid, Oregon soccer

Schmid had a hat trick as Oregon steamrolled over Rochelle 8-1 on Saturday to finish the regular season at 16-1. Schmid has 30 goals on the season. The Hawks will host a regional starting this Saturday when they host Aurora Rosary at noon.
