Rockford Police use Taser to arrest armed gang member at gas station

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police officers subdued an armed gang member using a Taser at an Auburn Street gas station on Sunday night.

According to Rockford Police, officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Police Enforcement (SCOPE) team pulled into the On the Way Gas Station, at 2627 Auburn Street, to make a traffic stop at 7:30 p.m.

The front passenger, identified as Jerome Garrett , 36, got out of the car and walked toward the store. When he saw the Rockford officers get out of their car, he ran, police said.

Authorities said he was chased down on foot and continued to resist officers, resulting in a Taser being used to subdue him.

Police said a loaded gun was found on his person.

Garrett was charged with Armed Habitual Criminal, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Possession of a Firearm by a Gang Member, and Resisting Arrest.

He was booked into the Winnebago County Jail.

Garrett has prior convictions for armed robbery, carjacking, and narcotics.
