ROBERTSDALE, Ala. (WKRG) — It’s not once a century, but it’s once in long while. This is video from the home of Clay and Brenda Allison in Robertsdale.

This Century Plant was planted at their home when they moved there in 2005 and in about last week, it just started blooming. A giant stalk began growing from the center of the plant at a rapid pace. At the top of the tall stalk, flowers are blooming.

Even though they’re called century plants, the bloom every 10 to 25 years. News 5’s Caroline Carithers did a story back in 2021 about a woman in Mobile whose century plant had just bloomed .
Back in 2021 the director of horticulture at Bellingrath Gardens told us “no one really knows what kickstarts the blooming process. Once the plant blooms, the base will start to die, but it will leave behind little ‘pups’ or seeds that can be translated. Those will then bloom in another 10 to 25 years.”
