MSU professor debuts documentary questioning ethics of surveillance

A documentary created by 33-time regional Emmy Award winner and MSU professor Troy Hale tackles the growing pervasiveness of the surveillance state by drawingseveral comparisons between present reality and the dystopian novel "1984" by George Orwell. "1984 wasn't meant to be a how-to book, it was supposed to be a warning," Hale said in a post-viewing Q&A. The documentary, "Humanity (1984/2026),"premiered on Thursday as a program for the ongoing "Reality Check" MSU Museum exhibition, which runs until Dec. 12.The documentary goes beyond asking what is technologically possible to analyze and the morality of technology's usage. "It really showcases, what I personally believe, is the embodiment of reality check," said Brittany Carter, the MSU Museum education program coordinator, adding that the documentary questions whether the cons are "really worth"the pros for artificial intelligence surveillance. Surveillance is not always associated with AI either, Carter said, but cited Flock cameras, which uses AIto capture, record and analyze data to identify potential criminal violations. "I don't think a lot of people might know that Flock cameras use AI or those kinds of traffic cameras use AI, and then require all of these data centers,"Carter said. Like Orwell's cautionary tale, the film argues the belief

High school football: Breaking down the top games in Week 9

This is it for the Kensington Lakes Activities Association. The league was formed 18 years ago. Now, thanks to conference realignment, it’s calling it quits, with 12 teams headed to the Southeastern Conference next school year and Northville and Novi moving to the Oakland Activities Association. That makes Friday’s KLAA championship game between Gold Division winner Howell (8-0, 6-0) and Black winner Northville (7-1, 5-1) the final football game in league history. And, boy, are there plenty of storylines to help the KLAA go out with a bang. Howell is looking to three-peat as league champion, an impressive feat considering it had to knock off Belleville to claim its first two titles, including upsetting Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood to win in 2024. More: Subscribe to our high school football newsletter “For Howell to win KLAA championships, that’s something special with how good Belleville has been over the years,” Howell coach Brian Lewis said Oct. 19. “To be in that category speaks volumes of this program. Winning championship game trophies and keeping the hardware at home, even in our rivalry games, that just shows the commitment of the players in our program.” But Howell must figure out how to beat Northville.

Every Student. Every Step. Every Day.

Schools are supposed to be a place for students to learn, develop relationships, and prepare for their futures, all while being in a secure environment. However, growing concerns about school violence and emergency preparedness have made school safety an important issue. While schools often focus on security measures within their buildings, protecting students also requires considering what happens outside the classroom. At Concord, middle school students walk to the high school for a portion of their class periods, which raises important questions about whether current safety procedures protect every student no matter where they are.

MSU tries coercion to bring shunned trustees in line | Finley

Mike Balow and I are enjoying the sunshine of a gorgeous East Lansing fall afternoon from the very top row of Spartan Stadium, looking directly through the uprights in Section 1 of the north end zone. Not terrible seats for 25 bucks each on StubHub, and it's good to be settled in after the long walk from an off-campus parking garage. Above us and to our right, we can see Balow's colleagues on the Michigan State University board and their guests peering through the glass of the trustee's suite, where Balow watched MSU football games last season, his first on the board. For a Spartan fan, those suite tickets are sweet indeed, and the seats are much cushier than the aluminum bleacher boards we are perched on. The beer and food are free up there, and the menu is better than the slab of cheese pizza and hot dogs we are enjoying. But Balow and fellow board member Rema Vassar aren't welcome to hobnob in the swanky suite or park in the trustee's lot because they are being shunned by the other six trustees for not signing what amounts to a loyalty oath. They feel the document, which forbids them

Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum encourages MSU students to build lifelong voting habits

Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum urged Michigan State University students to start building voting habits in college, saying early participation helps students maintain lifelong community engagement. "Voting is a habit," Byrum told The State News. "And if we can get young people engaged while they're in college, while they're 18, then they're going to remain engaged throughout their life." Byrum spoke as part of the Lyman Briggs Speaker Series on Wednesday to encourage students to see voting as an opportunity to exercise influence through explanations of election procedures. Students attending college away from home often grapple with deciding where to register and the residual implications. Byrum addressed concerns about whether registering using a college address would affect financial aid or health insurance during her presentation. Students can still be listed as dependents under their parents, which should not affect financial aid or health insurance. Changing the address during voter registration also updates the address on a Michigan driver's license. "You can update your address to your college address if you want to, and you can vote at your college address if you want to," Byrum said. Audience questions reflected some of the uncertainties students face when navigating elections. One attendee

HCS board president says lack of movement on super hire is 'shameful'

Hartland Consolidated Schools selected a superintendent search firm, despite concerns from some trustees about the cost and pace of the process, during a meeting Oct. 19. Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) was approved 6-0, absent Jeff Campbell. The firm describes itself online as “a network of education experts that work for boards/trustees and administrators to recruit and develop great leaders, plan for the future, provide additional human resources to move critical projects and initiatives forward, and evaluate program and department effectiveness." HYA is based in Illinois. Under the agreement, the district will pay a base fee of $21,500, with additional fees for some services. Superintendent Chuck Hughes announced in July that he'll retire effective Dec. 31. Shortly thereafter, trustees formed a superintendent search committee including Board President Kristin Coleman, Treasurer Greg Keller and Trustee Glenn Gogoleski. The committee met three times between August and October, according to Keller. HYA “rose to the top” for consideration, he said, because it can cast a wider net than other firms. “As a board, we owe it to the community, staff, students and everyone else to ... put our best foot forward and spend a reasonable amount of money to do this the
