Woman gets 72-month federal prison sentence for robbing convenience stores
CHICAGO — A woman has been sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for participating in a string of convenience store robberies, mostly on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Equesha Butler, 30, pleaded guilty to three counts of interfering with commerce by threat or violence before U.S. District Judge Jennifer Coleman, according to court records. Coleman ordered her to surrender to federal authorities to begin serving her sentence by June 24. She must also pay $3,140 in restitution to the stores and three clerks who lost personal property during the crime.
Thieves burglarize parked law enforcement cars on Far Northwest Side
CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago police are warning about a series of car break-ins targeting law enforcement vehicles on the city's Far Northwest Side.Police say the suspects are targeting both marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles. All of these incidents are happening in residential neighborhoods.Since Sunday, there have been at least three different break-ins in Forest Glen, Norwood Park, and Edison Park. Two of those break-ins are believed to have happened overnight. One officer who lives in Norwood Park said that he left his house Tuesday morning to take his kids to school when he noticed the window of his squad car busted out completely, but nothing was taken specifically. According to police, a dark-colored SUV pulled up to a parked car, where the suspect then broke the window and took whatever was inside the passenger compartment and trunk. It's not clear what was taken from the cars.Police were unable to specify what kind of law enforcement vehicles were being targeted. ROGERS PARK — A Rogers Park-based mobile crisis team is resolving the majority of mental health emergency calls it receives without police intervention. Trilogy’s First-Response Alternative Crisis Team was founded in 2022 through a state pilot program aimed at providing alternatives to calling 911 for people experiencing mental health issues. The group, also known as FACT, was recently approved for state funding for the next fiscal year, and providers hope to continue expanding the program, leaders said.
