Brookfield Zoo hosting Earth Day themed events this weekend
CHICAGO (CBS)— In honor of Earth Day, the Brookfield Zoo will host two events over the weekend. On Saturday, they will be holding their annual Party for the Planet recycling event. Anyone can drop off items, including textiles, electronics, plastic appliances, and books.The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the zoo's main parking lot, which is located at 8400 31st Street.Then on Sunday, families and runners will partake in the zoo's Earth Day Run.The 2.2-mile, non-competitive run will kick off at 8 a.m. and takes place inside the park. All participants will receive an Earth Day Run commemorative medal and a packet of wildflower seeds to help start their own gardens. Entry fee for the race is $35 per person and includes full-day admission to the Zoo.To register, visit the Brookfield Zoo's website. Tesla recalls nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks
Tesla recalled all Cybertrucks made between November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024. The MY 2024 Cybertrucks have faulty accelerator pedals that may be dislodged when high force is applied, the National Highway Traffic Association, which issued the recall report, said. The recall affects nearly 4,000 cars, Reuters reported.The pedal could become trapped in the interior trim above it, which may increase the risk of collision, the agency said. Tesla also introduced an unapproved change – using soap as a lubricant when assembling the accelerator pedal. CPD warn businesses after robber targets 4 auto parts stores on West, Northwest Sides
CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago police issued a warning Friday morning following a series of armed robberies targeting auto parts stores on the West and Northwest Sides.There have been four robberies within the last month, dating back to March 23, with the latest incident happening on Tuesday.Police believe the crimes were performed by the same man. They say in all the incidents a man approaches the counter and asks about car parts. He then pulls out a handgun with an extended magazine and says, "It's a robbery."The suspect then leaves the scene in a silver Mercedes sedan with dark-tinted windows and aftermarket rims.Police describe the individual as a Black man in his 20s, between 5-feet-11 and 6-foot-2, with a thin build, darker skin, fresh white Nikes, and tattoos under his right eye and on the back of his right hand.Police are advising businesses not to reason with this individual and to call 911 immediately with a detailed description.Businesses are also advised to ensure their security cameras are working and recording.

Judge Juan Merchan has said he wants opening statements in former President Donald Trump's New York criminal trial to begin on Monday. Chicago police find man stabbed to death in Pilsen
CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was found stabbed to death on the city's Lower West Side early Friday morning. Chicago police said around 4:17 a.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of South Loomis Street in Pilsen, where they found a man, 23, with stab wounds to the back, stomach, and shoulder. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by fire officials.Area 3 detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No further information was immediately available.

Could cold snap delay cicadas' emergence in Illinois?
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Nature enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting this year's historic arrival of periodical cicadas.In the Chicago area, the emerging cicada brood comes every 17 years, while downstate, a different brood is emerging that comes every 13 years. This is the first time both broods have emerged together since 1803, numerous reports point out.For most of their lives, cicadas live underground and emerge once the soil reaches 64 degrees. The expectation has been that they will appear sometime in May or early June, according to Ken Johnson, a horticulture educator at the University of Illinois.In Missouri, the ground has reached 64 degrees 8 inches below the surface – perfect conditions for the cicadas to start emerging.But in some states, an incoming cold snap could delay their arrival and put everything behind schedule.Could Illinois be one of those states? CBS 2 asked an entomologist, and Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon, about the weather impact.According to state data, the soil temperature was about 53 degrees as of Thursday, April 18. Showers to decrease in overnight hours Thursday into Friday in Chicago

Safety still a concern for Chicago rideshare drivers even as Uber makes changes

Fans want Sky game vs. Caitlin Clark's Fever to be moved to bigger venue
CHICAGO (CBS) – Basketball star Caitlin Clark is expected to draw huge crowds as she heads to Chicago this summer when her Indiana Fever play the Chicago Sky.Some fans are pushing for the Sky to move the games to a much larger venue.Fans started an online petition calling for the games to be moved from Wintrust Arena to the United Center. The two games, June 23 and Aug. 30, are already nearly sold out, and ticket prices are steep.Wintrust Arena has a capacity of a little more than 10,000 fans, while the United Center can hold twice as many people for basketball games.There is one scheduling problem. A concert is already scheduled at the United Center on June 23.Clark was recently drafted by the Fever after leading the University of Iowa women's team to the NCAA Championship.Two other WNBA teams have already moved their games against Indiana to larger venues.
Woman, man shot dead in suspected murder-suicide in Lemont motel
LEMONT, Ill. (CBS) -- A woman was found murdered Thursday morning at a motel in southwest suburban Lemont, and a man's body was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot.Lemont police were called to the D-Lux Budget Inn, 12241 Archer Ave., at 9:33 a.m. They found a woman in an end unit at the motel who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was dead.A short time afterward, police canvassed adjacent rooms in the motel and found the body of Richard Crane, 62, who was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. The investigation determined the man had shot himself with the same gun that was used to kill the woman.A murder-suicide is suspected.A motive was not known as of late Thursday, and police have not established a relationship between Crane and the woman.The investigation was ongoing late Thursday, but there was no threat to the community.
Protesters demand firing of CPD officers involved in Dexter Reed shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Community organizers held a rally Thursday afternoon to demand the firing of the five Chicago police officers involved in the shooting death of Dexter Reed.Organizers were outside of Chicago Police Department headquarters in support of Reed and his family before a Chicago Police Board meeting. They also said they want CPD Supt. Larry Snelling to be fired.The officers said they were conducting a traffic stop in the 3800 block of West Ferdinand for a seatbelt violation. Police body camera footage shows police shooting 96 times in 41 seconds by a CPD tactical team, killing Reed.In the weeks since the shooting, the head of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability called on Snelling to strip the officers of their police powers as the investigation continued. She raised questions about the validity of the traffic stop.Snelling said, for now, he won't strip the five officers of their police powers.
