RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The Ridgewood girls lacrosse came into Monday night with two goals: advance to the semifinals of the Bergen County tournament and honor their senior class. Mission accomplished on both fronts, as the Maroons blew away Mahwah 22-4.
Believe it or not, things were tight in the early going. Ridgewood’s offense was clicking en route to five first quarter points, but their defense conceded three goals. Heading into the second quarter, the game was 5-3, and it looked as if we were in store for a back-and-forth affair. It was not to be, as the Maroons blew the game open in the second quarter, scoring another five goals while not allowing one on the defensive end.
Coming out of halftime with a 9-4 advantage, the Ridgewood lead continued to balloon throughout the third quarter, as the Maroons racked up another four goals. The game was already well in hand, but it was in the fourth quarter that Ridgewood turned it into a rout. They scored eight unanswered goals to expand their lead even further, eventually winning 22-4.
They were paced by Katie Adams, who led the team with five goals on the afternoon, including three consecutive goals in the third quarter. “Katie’s been like that all year,” said Head Coach Jim Montegari. “She had a good streak. Her ground balls were phenomenal, she had some nice takeaways, and she worked the ball down the field. I thought she looked good.”
The Maroons now advance to the semi-finals of the Bergen County tournament, where they will meet Glen Rock with a trip to the finals hanging in the balance. They had a cold spell in the middle of their schedule but appear to be rounding into form at the most pivotal time of the season. “We are in a good place,” said Coach Montegari. “Our offense is starting to click. Our middies are running well, and our defense is communicating the way they should, so I’m feeling good.”
After the game, the senior class was honored for their years of service to the program. There is no doubt that notching such an emphatic win on senior night meant a lot to the outgoing players, but they are not done yet. Glen Rock awaits them on Wednesday, and the only thing better than ending your playing career with a successful senior night is ending it with a championship victory.
