DCOA announces recipients of Peter Pinto scholarships
The recipients of this year’s Desert Community Orchestra Association (DCOA) sponsored Peter Pinto Memorial Music Scholarship are cellist Aiden Kyte and violinist Amanda Hunyh. The Peter Pinto Music Scholarship is awarded annually to students (graduating high school senior to 22nd birthday) planning to continue their musical studies privately or in college. Applicants are evaluated on their musical performance, school and community involvement, and future musical goals. The award is named for the late Dr. Peter Pinto, a former local pediatrician, who was a long-time member and supporter of the Desert Community Orchestra. This year’s awards total $4000, the largest amount given to date by the DCOA.

Burroughs end season with win, await playoff fate
It was Senior Day and the season home finale for the Burroughs baseball team when it hosted Serrano. The Burros were coming off a 5-4 extra inning loss at Serrano on Wednesday, and needed a win to keep their hopes for an at-large bid for CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs alive. Under 35 miles per hour winds, the Burroughs held the Diamondbacks scoreless to secure a 2-0 win, and secure a 13-12 overall record and a 4-11 Mojave River League record for fourth place.
Burros track and field have 17 qualify for CIF
After finishing the Mojave River League meets, the 2024 MRL champions Burroughs girls and the boys track and field teams turned their attention to the MRL Finals meet at Oak Hills. The Burros went into the event knowing they had a chance to qualify for CIF-SS Division 3 Preliminary meet at Yorba Linda High School on Thursday, May 4th.
After over a year CL construction project nearing completion
In March 2023, the City of Ridgecrest contracted Everlevel Holdings Inc. for a sewer rehabilitation project. After over a year of construction, the project is nearing completion. According to Everlevel Holdings Inc.’s superintendent, George Zunich, the project is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Sierra Sands Unified School District officials said a job advertisement posted on Indeed.com has been addressed. The post was an advertisement for a child nutrition service office assistant. The ad stated that people with a criminal record are encouraged to apply.
Late Surge Sees Tempe Win Arizona Title
Tempe defeated Red Mountain in the Arizona Boys HS D1 final Friday night, taking the game and the championship 34-21. It was a windy evening and Red Mountain started with the breeze at their backs. However, they had difficulty making it work for them. An eager Tempe defense put pressure on Red Mountain and that produced turnovers and mistakes.

AltaOne's recently formed foundation pulled out all the stops by offering attendees all the ambiance of a luxury casino in what it hopes to be the first of an annual fundraiser to assist two local, graduating seniors pursue a higher education by giving them $2,500 in scholarship money.
Burroughs softball falls on the road in season finale
The Burroughs softball team finished its Mojave River League season on the road at Serrano. The Burros went into the game having upset the league third place Apple Valley on Monday, and needed a win to have a chance to get into the playoff. But a last-minute rally fell short and the Burros lost to the Diamondbacks 11-6. Burroughs ends the season with a 9-12 overall record and a 3-7 league record.
Ridge-Con Fantasy Festival set for Saturday at DEF

Pierce, Vieweg to become magnet schools
Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, Pierce and Vieweg elementary schools will become magnet schools. The Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Education, at its April 18 meeting, voted to authorize Pierce as a transitional kindergarten – sixth-grade visual and performing arts magnet school and Vieweg as a TK – eighth-grade science, technology engineering and math magnet school.
