Kids don’t pay property taxes, but they live with the choices we make about them. The Sumter County Youth Soccer Club has alerted families about a possible closure of Lake Panasoffkee Recreation Park. The county’s own July budget packet shows that the stakes are even bigger. Under its alternate budget, both the recreation park and the Lake Panasoffkee library branch are marked “No” under “Remain Open.” Belvedere and Webster’s libraries are on the list, too. The scenario contemplated facility closures beginning in July 2027. The county says the alternate budget was never adopted.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds took center stage at MacDill AirFest on Nov. 5-6 in 2011. The Air Force estimated that 80,000 spectators attended the first day alone. For two days the Thunderbirds, flying their signature F-16 Fighting Falcons, thrilled crowds with precision formations and daring maneuvers. Other highlights included parachute demonstrations and flights featuring military aircraft from different generations. There were military aircraft displays, and opportunities for visitors to get up close to the aircraft and crews.
