RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond’s peregrine falcon pair has welcomed their first two chicks after they hatched during a livestream by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

The peregrine falcon pair, 95/AK and 59/BM, that nest in downtown Richmond atop the Riverfront Plaza building, welcomed their first chick after it hatched at around 7:34 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24.

About two hours after the first chick emerged from its egg, a sibling hatched at around 9:37 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to the department, a total of four eggs were laid by the female falcon, 95/AK, which makes 2024 the fifth year in a row that she has laid a clutch of four eggs.

Newly hatched falcon chicks weigh about 30 to 40 grams, or 1.25 ounces, and are unable to fully thermoregulate — or maintain core body temperature — for the first two weeks of life. Therefore, the parents will continue to spend time on the nest with the chicks after they hatch, according to the department.
