HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prevented a Henrico man from bringing a loaded gun onto a flight at the Richmond International Airport on Monday.
On Monday, April 15, a Henrico man was cited by police after TSA workers at the airport discovered he had a loaded gun in his carry-on.
According to the TSA, the firearm was a 9mm gun loaded with 13 bullets.
The handgun was detected as the man entered through the security checkpoint. According to the TSA, the X-ray unit detected the gun in the man’s carry-on bag, prompting TSA workers to take a closer look.
This is the second gun to be detected at a Richmond International Airport TSA checkpoint in three days, with a Chesterfield man being cited for a similar offense on Saturday, April 13.
The gun was removed by Richmond Airport Police, who then took the gun and the man received a weapons charge. According to the TSA, he will face a penalty up to $15,000 for carrying weapons, depending on the situation.
“It is disappointing to see so many travelers bringing their firearms to our checkpoints,” said Robin ‘Chuck’ Burke, the TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “Firearms are not permitted to be carried through security checkpoints and onto planes. Responsible gun owners know where their guns are at all times and they know not to bring them to an airport security checkpoint. Our TSA officers continue to stay alert and vigilant to help ensure that nothing prohibited or illegal gets onto a flight.”
Passengers are only allowed to travel with an unloaded, properly secured firearm in their checked baggage. For more information, check out the TSA’s website .
