The recent shooting of two police officers in Hermann, one of them fatal, is a reminder of the impact such events can have on a community. I was a reporter in Odessa, Texas, in September 2007, when three officers were shot by a domestic violence suspect. Two of them died that night, the third a few days later.

There continues to be an outpouring of community support for the families of the two officers shot in Hermann on March 12. “I just want to say thank you to each and every person from Franklin, Gasconade counties, and beyond that have shown support for Detective Sergeant Mason Griffith and Officer Adam Sullentrup this last week,” said New Haven Police Chief Christopher Hammann, who worked with Sullentrup at NHPD and knew Griffith. “Both men dedicated their lives and careers to serve the communities in which they lived and worked. I have attended multiple funerals for first responders over the years and have never seen this level of support for law enforcement in my life.”

The hearing for Kenneth Simpson, 35, of Steelville, set for Monday was canceled on Friday after the defense asked for a change in judge. Matthew Houston has been assigned to preside over the case. Fatality in Gasconade County accident
GASCONADE COUNTY, Mo. – A Berger driver dies from his injuries in a single-vehicle accident Sunday, March 19. A Missouri State Highway Patrol report indicates at approximately 1:30 a.m., southbound driver Markus R. Eldringhoff, 20, crossed into the northbound lane of Route J, 1.5 miles south of Highway 100. Eldringhoff reportedly overcorrected and struck a fence and tree.

On Monday, Associate Judge Matthew Houston for the 20th Judicial Circuit Court was named as the new judge. UPDATE: Missouri’s attorney general wants answers regarding now-closed Mexico/Fulton hospitals
939 the Eagle News has learned that Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s office has launched what’s known as a CID into the now-closed Mexico and Fulton hospitals. Bailey spokeswoman Madeline Sieren tells 939 the Eagle that a CID is a civil investigative demand and that it’s essentially a subpoena power that is reserved for the attorney general’s office. Ms. Sieren cannot elaborate on any details.

A Warren County man awaits sentencing after he’s found guilty of committing a triple homicide nine years ago. Judge Rebeca Navarro-McKelvey found Shawn Kavanagh, of Bellflower, guilty Friday of three counts of first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, first-degree domestic assault resulting in serious physical injury, and first-degree burglary. McKelvey will sentence Kavanagh at a future date.
