Tea comes together after storm causes potential total losses in damage
TEA, SOUTH DAKOTA − Neighborhoods and businesses are now in the recovery process after a fast-moving Saturday, July 25, storm caused widespread damage. The system produced winds between 60 and 80 mph; none greater than the 92 mph wind gust recorded in Tea by the National Weather Service. The NWS also recorded 81 and 75 mph wind gusts in Tea, one of the communities hit hardest in Minnehaha County. Damage was mainly isolated to private property and public roadways, with multiple structures losing power. Tea City Administrator Justin Weiland explained that power was mostly restored by July 27 and that city crews had cleared roadways. Public property damage was minimal. Private damage was mainly to trees, fences and roofs and is currently incalculable. Weiland said he believes some metal structures and commercial buildings may eventually be deemed total losses. Watch the rolling clouds bring in a large rainstorm into Sioux Falls As of July 29, city crews were picking up large limbs and branches placed along the boulevard and are offering a drop-off site for tree debris through Aug. 3.
