State baseball playoffs: Reno looks to stop North's 20-year large-class losing streak

It's been 20 years since a Northern Nevada school won the large-class state baseball tournament, so is this the year the North gets back on top?

Reno won the state title in 2004 in Class 4A for its fifth in school history. That was the last time a team from the North won the large-class title.

The Huskies won the 5A-North Regional on Saturday, beating Bishop Manogue, 3-2, in the championship at Peccole Park.

The Huskies (24-9 overall) face the 5A-South No. 2 seed Coronado (22-13) at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop Gorman campus.

Bishop Manogue (21-13), the North's No 2 seed, will play Palo Verde (25-10) at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gorman.

Manogue also won state in 2004, in Class 3A. That was the Miners' eighth state title; they collected five in 3A and three in 2A.

Reno won one state title in 4A and four in the 3A. Wooster won state in 2002 in Class 4A; the Colts then-coach, Ron Malcolm, is now an assistant on the Huskies staff.

Palo Verde is ranked No. 1 in Nevada in the Maxpreps rankings. The Panthers stayed in the winners' bracket last week, beating Foothill 7-6 in 10 innings before defeating Green Valley 6-5, Coronado 3-1 and then Coronado again, 11-0 in the final.

The Panthers are led by junior Brady Dallimore (6-foot-4, 211 pounds), who has committed to TCU. He is batting .565. His teammate, senior Drew Kaplan, is batting .462.

In the 5A-South Regional last week, Coronado beat Liberty 3-2 (9 innings), then beat Faith Lutheran 6-3 before losing to Palo Verde. In the losers' bracket, Coronado beat Green Valley 7-6 to advance to face Palo Verde again.

Last year, Bishop Gorman beat Desert Oasis, 10-1 for the 5A state championship.

In the 3A, Pahrump Valley beat South Tahoe, 3-0, for the state championship last year.

In the 2A, Lake Mead beat Yerington 4-, for the 2A state championship in 2023.

In the 1A, Indian Springs beat Pahranagat Valley 6-5 for the state championship last year.
