Open houses have been scheduled for June 12 and July 16 to gain public input on concepts for new housing projects on the Aspen Meadows campus. The Aspen Institute, Aspen Center for Physics and Aspen Music Festival and School will be submitting a development application to the city of Aspen later this year to build deed-restricted housing on the campus, according to a joint news release from the three entities titled “Housing the Aspen Idea.” The release does not include specific details about preliminary concepts such as the number of buildings and units that would be sought through the Aspen City Council’s approval process.

Reading Sky Quartos’ letter regarding the new library board member I was amazed how she was able to include all of the scary catch phrases for anybody that doesn’t think like she does. I wonder if she ever uses the library and would she please document any of the awful things the trustees have done. Also, it’s nice that she was able to mention God.
Officials warn the public to recreate safely outdoors this holiday weekend
With Memorial Day Weekend marking the unofficial start to summer, officials are reminding the public to be safe when they head outdoors to recreate. For Colorado Parks and Wildlife, water safety is a big part of that. Recently, in Garfield County, there were two deaths caused by drowning at state parks in a single week. On May 12, New Castle resident Diego Gutierrez Caraveo, 26, drowned after falling off a paddle board at Rifle Gap State Park. A week later, on May 19, Kelvin Velis Rivera, 28, of Rifle drowned after falling off a paddle board at Harvey Gap State Park. Neither man was wearing a life preserver, according to officials.

Memorial Day travelers hoping for a long, scenic drive through the Rockies may have to re-route their plans. Independence Pass, the popular highway that connects Aspen to Twin Lakes and passes beneath four fourteeners, will remain closed through Memorial Day weekend. Its anticipated opening date has been pushed back to June 1.

The Wheeler Opera House will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1984 grand re-opening of the historic theater. Festivities begin Friday night with a performance by the band Peach Street Revival of Grand Junction. Tickets are $15, which include one free beer, wine or soda from the bar. Eighties-style outfits are encouraged, along with pink or big hair, punk attitudes and heavy metal gear — anything with a 1980s’ vibe.
Mudslide closes Colorado mountain highway indefinitely
Both directions of traffic on State Highway 82 near Carbondale were closed Sunday morning due to a mudslide. The slide was caused by a broken irrigation line, according to a Cardondale Fire Protection District's social media post. The mud traveled about 300 feet downhill near the highway's intersection with Catherine Store Road and Garfield County Road 100, located approximately mid-way between Carbondale and El Jebel.The slide covered all lanes of traffic. One photo from the fire department's post showed a passenger vehicle, most likely a minivan, stalled in the middle of the slide's debris field.There were no reports of injuries, and the highway was re-opened after 4 p.m., about eight hours after it was closed. During the closure, traffic was diverted around the closure through downtown Carbondale along County Road 100, Main Street and County Road 106. The hill above the slide is a man-made berm for a farm field, according to a fire department employee.

Kebler Pass Road a no-go for this weekend
Despite its best efforts, Gunnison County Public Works has said it will not open Kebler Pass Road west of Crested Butte in time for Memorial Day weekend. However, Cottonwood Pass, a paved road, will be ready to open on Friday and crews report that Gothic Road has been drying out well enough to open on Friday as well.
