Kansas State lifecycle sssessment demonstrates economic advantage of Charolais genetics
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new lifecycle assessment conducted by Kansas State University (KSU) researchers demonstrates the economic advantage of Charolais genetics across commercial beef production systems, with Charolais-cross cattle generating the highest total industry value among the breed combinations modeled. The assessment, conducted by KSU researchers Dr. Logan Thompson and Dr. Bob Weaber in cooperation with the American-International Charolais Association (AICA), modeled commercial beef production systems across the cow-calf, backgrounding and finishing phases. Researchers evaluated major U.S. beef breeds at matched carcass endpoints to measure how breed-based genetic differences translate into economic value throughout the production chain. At a 1,000-pound carcass endpoint, Charolais-cross cattle generated $170.18 per head in total industry value — the highest return of any breed combination modeled. That represented a $14.87-per-head advantage over Angus-cross cattle and a $41.95-per-head advantage over Simmental-cross cattle at the same carcass endpoint.
