Rantoul hosting public meeting to discuss PFAs in water from Chanute Air Force Base

RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Rantoul residents will be able to learn about the water contamination from “forever chemicals” at the former Chanute Air Force Base during a public meeting tonight.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Rantoul Village Hall’s board room. Representatives from the Department of the Air Force will be answering questions on the contamination from the base from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

The Department of the Air Force is planning a Remedial Investigation to help identify the extent of contamination and its health and environmental effects.

PFAs have a variety of manufacturing and industry uses, including foam for fire fighting and chemicals to service planes.
