Ocean State keeps forgetting it can burn | Opinion

Growing up on a western Rhode Island farm in the 1940s, wildfire was always on my mind. Our farm sat on top of a hill, providing my brother and me with the perfect vantage point to spot fires as they sparked. Back then, Rhode Island faced huge wildfires every summer, and our community became engaged in land management and fire prevention. As active management reduced wildfire risk, the threat of another devastating fire felt distant. Elected officials prioritized other issues, and the forests went unmanaged until another large fire inevitably sparked. Unfortunately, support for smart wildfire policy, funding and prevention projects has dwindled. In 2023, we faced a wakeup call with the Queen’s River fire in Exeter. 'Life-threatening' conditions as Josephine passed Cape Cod - but they were offshore

The storm expected to bring storm-force wind gusts and rain to Cape Cod and the Islands Thursday earned a name - Subtropical Storm Josephine - before spinning out to sea and leaving the Cape & Islands with a sunny weekend. "Even though it did acquire a name – which really just means it acquired subtropical characteristics – really nothing else has changed in terms of the expected impacts here in southern New England," said Caitlyn Mensch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton. "Dangerous to life-threatening marine conditions remain the primary concern, particularly across the ocean waters southeast of Nantucket," NWS Norton said Thursday, of conditions Oct. 22. In Hyannis , sustained winds of 24 mph were expected Thursday, with gusts of up to 39 mph, the NWS said. Provincetown could have experienced sustained winds of around 26 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. On Nantucket
