City may discontinue intersection project
The Abilene City Commission made some headway on a course of action for the NW 14th Street and Van Buren Street intersection project during the commission’s May 13 meeting. With the Kansas Department of Transportation requesting a prompt answer on whether the city will accept the cost share program funds, the majority of the commission voted to not build a roundabout to replace the “turkey foot” intersection. They also directed staff to attempt to create a design concept that keeps the general form of the intersection that KDOT will approve.

The persistence of oral health experts succeeded as they swayed one Abilene City Commissioner to change her vote during Monday’s commission meeting, ending in a 3-2 result to reintroduce fluoride into the city’s water.
Police chase stolen car through Hillsboro
Many in Hillsboro began their morning hearing sirens on Monday, May 13. According to a press release from the Hillsboro Police Department, at 6:10 a.m. a Hillsboro Police Officer was taking a vehicle theft report at 306 N. Birch from Quadaloupe Sosme who reported that her 2013 GMC Terrain had been stolen overnight.

The family of Anne Janzen will be hosting a retirement party with a come-and-go open house to celebrate her 42 years of service as an educator for Marion County Special Education Cooperative in the USD 410 school district.
