For first time in 10 years, FBI addresses Lake Oconee murders
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - For the first time in 10 years, the FBI is speaking publicly about the double murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond. The elderly couple was killed in 2014. Police found Russell Dermond beheaded inside the garage of their Lake Oconee home. Days later, investigators found Shirley Dermond floating in Lake Oconee with evidence that she’d been tied to cinderblocks and thrown into the water.

Shirley and Russell Dermond lived on Lake Oconee in Putnam County, Ga. Russell's body was discovered in their home on May 6, 2014 and Shirley's body was found in the lake on May 16, 2014. The FBI announced new evidence on May 2, 2024.
