PUNTA GORDA — The newly formed Charlotte Harbor LULAC Council No. 7276 is awarding scholarships to qualifying 2024 graduating Hispanic or Latino high school seniors from six local high schools.

Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School, Babcock Ranch High School, Charlotte High School, Port Charlotte High School and Charlotte Technical College students are eligible.

The members of the LULAC Scholarship Committee — Betty Barriga, Neysa Juan and Maria Lara — attended the Florida SouthWestern Collegiate High School Awards ceremony April 22 at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in Punta Gorda.

They presented Sophia Clancy, a native of Guatemala, with a LULAC scholarship for her outstanding academic achievements and community involvement.

Additional LULAC Scholarship Awards will be presented to the other high school seniors at their upcoming award ceremonies.

Each scholarship recipient will receive a certificate and a check in the amount of $300.

LULAC, which stands for the League of United Latin American Citizens, was established in 1929. LULAC’s mission includes advancing the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic/Latino population.

The new Charlotte Harbor LULAC Council’s scholarship program supports LULAC’s mission.

The Charlotte Harbor LULAC Council No. 7276 invites Hispanic/Latino residents and their friends in Charlotte County and the surrounding area to join the new council.

For more information, contact LULAC at lulac7276@gmail.com or by calling 404-987-7401.

Meetings of the Charlotte Harbor LULAC Council are held by Zoom from 6-7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
