Prosser, Wash. --- This Saturday is April 20th, also known as '420'.

Created in 1989, the reform organization Cannabis Action Network, associated with High Times, is credited for giving and donating to 420 and the date April 20 marked elements of political and cultural protest, organizing rallies on that date and assisting other groups in setting up other events.

According to Time Magazine, the name also comes from some high school students in Marin County, California.

In 1971, five students at San Rafael High School would get together at 4:20 p.m. by the campus’ statue of chemist Louis Pasteur to partake. They chose that specific time because extracurricular activities had usually ended by then.

420 has even become an international counterculture based on the celebration and consumption of cannabis.

While lots of people will be celebrating the day (and on a Saturday this year, nonetheless), local law enforcement agencies from Benton, to Franklin, Yakima to Grant counties will have extra patrols out.

On Friday, Apple Valley News Now's Austin Reed spoke with Trooper Thorson from Washington State Patrol while he was on duty in Prosser. Thorson said any marijuana is too much, if you are planning to drive.

"In Washington State, if you're over 21 cannabis is legal to use. But we want to remind everybody, please don't use cannabis on 420 this year and get behind the wheel because it is still illegal to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol," Thorson said.

A number of local events celebrating the day will also take place.
