Hotel demolition could open door to new development along I-70 | Exclusive
ZANESVILLE – It's not as bad as its former next-door neighbor , but the old Howard Johnson's hotel near the intersection of East Pike and Airport Road is next in the Muskingum County land bank's sights for demolition and redevelopment. It's a collaboration between it and local property owner Joel Downing, also owner of Zanesville Aviation, to partially prepare an approximately mile-long swath between East Pike and Interstate 70 that stretches westward from the Best Western. "Welcome to Hotel Dos," joked Andy Roberts, the land bank's executive director, as he unlocked the door. The Howard Johnson has sat vacant for just a couple months, Roberts noted, but it was rapidly becoming a microcosm of the old Holiday Inn and Travelodge being demolished on the next plot over . Ceiling tiles were starting to cave, piles of clutter were scattered around, and the pool was under the domain of algae blooms. City doesn't want Giant Eagle building to remain vacant for long
LANCASTER − Empty buildings are an eyesore for a community. Therefore, city officials want to fill the Giant Eagle building at 1394 Ety Shops Way after the company said it is closing the store there. However, city economic development director Stephanie Bosco said the city cannot formally market the building. "We have had developers reach out to us and say, 'What would you like to see there'?" Bosco said. "And, essentially then, they would go and try to buy it from Giant Eagle. So we can't market it, but we can certainly provide information and work in partnership with whoever wants to develop it." She said the city can tell developers what city zoning laws allow for the property. "Certainly, the city would do whatever we can so that property is used to the best of its ability," Bosco said. "Having a closed grocery store does not look vibrant to any future users. We would love to see it developed." She said the city would like to see someone build a hotel on the site, which she said the city needs. "We are trying to attract a hotel user," Bosco said. Other permitted uses include businesses of small, medium and
