Crook County On The Move has announced the release of a new children’s book about gardening, funded by a grant from Republic Services, just in time for the planting season.

“Grow” is filled with interactive ideas for hands on learning about food – from seed to table and beyond.

“You can travel these pages to plant a seed, care for and harvest your garden, explore how to prepare and share food, and learn how to compost, giving back to the soil,” said author and illustrator Anna Jones. “Tips for proper recycling of household waste are also included.”

The activity book, which will be distributed in Crook County elementary schools, will help meet Republic Services’ and Department of Environmental Quality’s goal of spreading the word of how to reduce waste in landfills by properly recycling and diverting food waste from household trash to a better use.

The new book will debut at the annual Crook County On The Move Community Garden Party on Saturday, May 11. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Prineville Presbyterian Church, 1771 NW Madras Highway.

The Garden Party will feature family fun for all ages. About 20 community agencies and organizations will offer interactive events, such as planting a small container garden, learning about pollinators, checking out “Red Wiggler” composting worms, making some garden art, enjoying a healthy treat and dancing with new friends.

OSU Extension Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your specific gardening questions. There is no charge for any of the activities and free seeds and plants, free prizes and free door prize drawings will be included.

Each household will receive a free coupon for “GROW – An Awesome Book About Gardening” when they register for the free door prize drawings.

“It’s our hope that families will read and do the activities together,” said Carol Benkosky, one of the Garden Party organizers.

“Grow” will also be available in some elementary classrooms.

“Our goal is to provide another resource for teachers when talking about healthy lifestyles for people and the planet,” said Donna Barnes, of Crook County On The Move. “The book is filled with kid-approved smoothie recipes, tips on how to clean fresh produce and make-it-yourself craft ideas.”

Crook County On The Move is a program of Crook County Foundation.

“This first foray into publishing an activity book for youth connects three pillars of the Foundation’s mission – arts, education and community service – and also supports our vision for a vibrant and engaged Crook County,” said Rebekah Lambert, Executive Director, Crook County Foundation. “We’re tremendously proud and excited about this project.”

Additional copies of the book will be for sale at CROP Farmers’ Market this summer or on Amazon.
