POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Looking to celebrate Mother’s Day while in nature? Powhatan State Park will host an event in honor of both native birds and Mother’s Day on Saturday, giving birders a special way to mark the occasion.

The event will be held rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, with attendees meeting at the playground parking area of the park.

Guests can expect to take an early morning walk throughout the park led by a James River Master Naturalist. Attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars if possible for a better view of birds.

Master bird bander, Bob Reiller from the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources will also teach the group about nesting behavior of avian parents.

A local gardener and James River Master Naturalist will give guests an overview of which native plants help birds.

A free native plant can be taken home on a first come, first served basis. A free birds and caterpillars bookmark will also be provided by the James River Master Naturalists.

In addition, kids who attend can create a bird nest craft.
