Storms wreak havoc in Atascosa County
A weather system that rolled into Atascosa County on Monday at around 11:30 a.m. caused significant damage as high winds, driving rain and hail plummeted parts of the county. Debris was strewn all over Poteet as trees were uprooted while roofs and fences were damaged for most of the city.
Fallen Officers’ Ceremony
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TCDJ), J.B. Connally Unit in Kenedy held it’s annual “Fallen Officers” ceremony, Wednesday, May 8th, 2024, in light of National Correctional Officers’ and Employees’ Week, May 5-11. Attendees were greeted in the courthouse upon entry into the chapel hall by a “riderless horse”, which, throughout time, has been known to honor fallen soldiers.

Nixon-Smiley CISD honors TIA designated teachers
The first group of Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) designated teachers were recognized at the Monday, May 13 Nixon-Smiley CISD Board meeting. Roxanne Villasana (Master), Cynthia Stowers (Master), Tabitha Miller (Exemplary), and Kimberly Moses (Master) were honored for achieving designations through the state’s Teacher Incentive Allotment program. Additionally, though not in attendance, Laura VanGundy (Master) and Patrice Turner (Master) earned designations.
Ramirez earns bachelor’s degree
Karnes City resident Lee Ashley Ramirez was one of 791 students who were presented with degrees during Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s spring commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 10. Ramirez received a Bachelor of Science degree.
Nixon-Smiley names Kirby as new head football coach
The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs will have a new head football coach for the 2024 season with a familiar face returning to the program. Former Nixon-Smiley assistant coach Paul Kirby will be replacing former head coach Troy Moses, who stepped down; Kirby last season was the assistant coach for a La Vernia team that made it to the regional championship round.
