PORTALES, N.M. — On Wednesday afternoon, 56-year-old Alton Pete Smith was sentenced to 15 years in prison for Trafficking Controlled Substances.

In June 2021, the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office conducted a routine traffic stop on South Roosevelt Rd. 3/US Hwy 70 when they noticed Smith acting suspiciously and refusing to show vehicle documents.

According to the press release, this led to a search warrant for the vehicle, where deputies found what they described as “a trafficking amount of methamphetamine,” along with a scale and baggies that were located and seized.

Smith received a 15-year sentence due to his past conviction of trafficking meth in Bernalillo County.
