Portales Police enforce speed camera program

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Portales Police Department announced it will begin enforcement of its automated speed camera program on Wednesday, April 19 to encourage safe driving in school zones, according to a press release.

The program will put fixed-speed cameras at the locations below.

• Portales Junior High School – Southeast bound at South Abilene Avenue
• Portales Junior High School – Northwest bound at South Abilene Avenue
• Valencia Elementary School – Northbound at South Roosevelt Road
• Valencia Elementary School – Southbound at South Globe Avenue

Portales Police will enforce school zone violations at the locations while the beacons are flashing and speed violations when the beacons are off. PPD said the cameras will capture photos and videos of drivers who speed. Violators will receive a Notice of Infraction from PPD sent to the car’s registered owner.

A pedestrian or cyclist hit by a vehicle traveling at 20 miles per hour has a 90% chance of living. In comparison, a pedestrian or cyclist hit by a vehicle traveling at 40 miles per hour has an 80% chance of dying, according to PPD.

“Accidents from speeding are preventable,” PPD said. “Speed is one of the biggest determinants in whether an accident results in a serious injury or fatality and reducing speeds to the posted speed limits will save lives.”
