ASHLAND, Wis.- The 24th annual Kids Fishing Day at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is set for June 1. Kids can fish free from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anglers and biologists will be on hand to teach attendees about fishing before students are able to try out fishing for themselves. There will be equipment on site for those who need it and everyone will go home with a free tackle kit. No advance registration is available.
Winners breaking records
The Madeline Island Marathon welcomed runners with perfect weather on May 18, and many endurance speedsters took full advantage — most notably the mens and womens full marathon winners who both broke course records. Alex Richardson clocked a sizzling 2:33:55 for the men, and Grace Flores a 3:10:24 for the women, over the 26.2 mile course. Hibbing, Minn.- The Hibbing Police Department is taking applications for the Range Youth Police Academy. Students in grades 8 - 12 can apply. The program is seven weeks long and allows students to be trained with police officers in the field. They’ll learn about evidence collection, radio communication, courtroom procedures and more. The Range Youth Police Academy will run every Monday starting June 17 and running through July 29.
Superior Rivers summer events: aquatic bugs, piping plovers, restoration review
Superior Rivers Watershed Association is kicking off summer with opportunities to learn more about the Lake Superior watershed. Aquatic bugs, sometimes called macroinvertebrates are an important environmental indicator that help identify potential threats to water quality and provide a report card for our waters. Clover Valley Farm Trail is now open for its second season
The Clover Valley Farm Trail began its second year on Sunday in Two Harbors. The trail was created by a group of ten community farms within a ten-mile radius. “Last January when everybody was, you know the one month where we actually get to get together and talk hatched this idea to do this kind of driving, biking trail,” said Cindy Hale, co-owner of Clover Valley Farms.

Ashland administrator sounds off on recent electric vehicle charging station bill
A bill signed by Gov. Tony Evers intended to entice business owners to install electric vehicle charging stations has a side effect that an Ashland official feels is crippling. Ashland installed two electric vehicle charging stations in a municipal lot last year to make the city greener and attract tourism. Since then, the chargers have received a fair amount of use. DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting a visual quality public meeting for the Hwy 61 project through Two Harbors on Tuesday, May 21, at 5 p.m. in the Two Harbors Public Library, 320 Waterfront Dr. The purpose of this public meeting is to share information on the aesthetics aspect of the Hwy 61 project. There will be a brief presentation and time for questions about the project.
