Postal workers along the Treasure Coast held an event on Sunday as a call for action to stop a growing number of assaults on mail carriers while delivering their routes.

The National Association of Letter Carriers union was at Sandhill Crane Park in Port St. Lucie.

Over 2,000 letter carriers across the country have been violently attacked since 2020. Last year alone, nearly 650 were attacked on the job. The union president says 15 percent of those attacks have resulted in both an arrest and a federal prosecution.

He's calling on the U.S. Postal Service to take stronger measures to safeguard its employees, federal prosecutors to prosecute the crimes against federal workers to the fullest extent of the law and they're asking Congress to pass the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act. It would call for the same type of sentencing for those convicted of assaulting or robbing a postal employee as those who do the same against a law enforcement officer.
