Police in Pompton Lakes are warning residents and businesses about a counterfeit money scam happening in the borough.

Authorities say several incidents of people using fake $100 bills to pay for lower prices items at stores have been reported this month.

During these incidents, police say the suspects have attempted to make purchases of food, or other consumable goods and services. They say many of these transactions have been with the $100 counterfeit bills with the total for goods or services being in the lower $20-$30 range.

Police are reminding business owners to use counterfeit detector pens and to contact them immediately if they find any fake money. They say some of the transactions have been caught and stopped by some business owners and employees that used the counterfeit detector pens.
