Kalispell’s Reserve Drive construction resumes
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with the City of Kalispell, Schellinger Construction, and DJ&A Engineering, will resume construction in late March on the Reserve Drive – Hutton Ranch Road to Whitefish Stage Road project. Final project completion is anticipated in November 2026. The construction schedule is weather-dependent and may change due to conditions or unforeseen circumstances. “This continues to be a much-needed project for the Flathead Valley,” John Schmidt, MDT Missoula acting district administrator, said. “Multiple projects are taking place in this area over the next few years, all in different phases. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to move everything forward in a safe and timely fashion.” The current traffic signals will remain active at the intersection of West Reserve Drive and Whitefish Stage Road until dedicated turn lanes are fully completed in 2026. These signals alternate the direction of traffic to safely manage left turns during construction. Drivers can anticipate delays up to 15 minutes in this location. Construction hours are from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Drivers should plan for lane configuration changes along the project corridor and expect reduced speed limits. Please stay alert for construction workers and trucks entering or exiting

Expect logging truck traffic up North Fork for awhile
If you’re traveling up the North Fork, expect to see logging trucks on the road. The Flathead National Forest has sold timber sales as part of the Frozen Moose Project, which has been in the works for about five years now and has multiple units in the area. All told, there’s about 2,300 acres of timber sales which amounts to 14.4 million board feet of timber, Hungry Horse/Glacier View District Ranger Rob Davies said at the North Fork Interlocal last month. “You’ll see a lot of log hauling the next few years,” he said. That means motorists need to be aware of log trucks on the North Fork Road. Davies added that one blowdown area from December’s wind storms will also likely be sold. It’s about 125 acres up Whale Creek Road. Folks are also encouraged to cut downed trees along Forest Service roads for firewood as long as it’s on public land. The trails in the North Fork are also expected to be a rough go, at least early in the season. The December wind storms were regionwide and numerous trees are down on just about every trail in the forest. The North Fork Trails Association did about 25%

Gateway project could start as soon as March 9
A big project to upgrade water lines and fix major streets in Columbia Falls could start as soon as March 9, Monte White of contractor Nelcon said earlier this week during an open house on the project. That date is contingent on the weather cooperating, he cautioned. The project, formally called the Gateway to Glacier Safety and Mobility Project consists of reconstructing 1.3 miles of roadway, installing 1.7 miles of sidewalks, and adding 1 mile of multi-use pathways along Fourth Avenue West from the north end of the city to 13th Street West and Seventh Street West from Fourth Avenue West to Nucleus Avenue. Multiple intersections will be improved with turn lanes and bulb outs, as well as parking improvements and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility in the downtown area. The first section to get underway runs from the Glacier Gateway school zone south to U.S. Highway 2. When a section of street is under construction, it will be closed to non-local traffic, White noted. People will still be able to access their homes and driveways, as they can put in temporary access while work is underway. The project has no impact on Highway 2, as water utilities do not

It’s Getting Ugly Out There
Whenever navigating profoundly altered Highway 93 between Kalispell and Whitefish, I recall John and Fred Zauner, onetime hardware merchants in the valley, saying it was only a matter of time until “progress” linked our two largest cities.
