High school football: Conley, Rose win thrillers on a night of mostly local winners
Trailing by three points early in the fourth quarter and buried deep in its own territory, D.H. Conley’s offense — bottled up all night to that point — got the play that it had needed to get going. The Vikings scored to retake the lead. D.H. Conley then held on down the stretch to beat South Central 26-22 Friday night in a Big Carolina 6A/7A Conference football matchup between the crosstown rivals at Hollywood Crossroads. While D.H. Conley (6-1, 2-0 BCC) had just scored a touchdown on a 17-yard keeper by quarterback Jack Hager to close a nine-point gap to three and then forced a three-and-out, the Vikings then committed a false-start penalty and lost 10 more yards on a sack, leaving them facing 2nd-and-25 at their own 25. But Hager found Varries Basnight on a screen pass. Basnight took the screen back up the middle and ran through a would-be tackler, turning what looked initially to be a modest gain into a 62-yard play. “That was probably the play of the game,” D.H. Conley coach Nate Conner said. “After penalties and everything else, I’m sure that’s one they’ll look back on and it’s going to kill them. It was

JoCo Sports Week 8 Football Preview: Clayton, Cleveland aim to stay unbeaten
It’s a simplistic headline, but one that accurately conveys the current state of Johnston County high school football. There are undefeated Clayton and Cleveland, and then the rest of the county sides on the wrong side of the .500 mark. Everyone not wearing a shade of blue has a combined 10-30 record, so when we talk about some dire and/or non-existent playoff chances, you’ll understand why.

High school football: Rose's two-way talent shining in 6-0 start to season
Given the embarrassment of riches J.H. Rose’s football team has, it could not be more appropriate that Daran Bell was the latest to answer the bell last Friday. He hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass on offense, and also intercepted two passes — the second of which he returned 50 yards for another touchdown — in the Rampants’ 43-0 victory over South Central in Winterville. The victory improved the Rampants’ record to a perfect 6-0 and 1-0 in the Big Carolina 6A/7A Conference. “He’s one of our best wide receivers, and just showed that he can play both ways,” J.H. Rose coach Will Bland said after the game. “It’s something special about these kids that go night in, night out and play offense and defense and never get tired.” On the touchdown offensively, in which Bell took the pass from quarterback Chase Davis and sprinted down the left sideline, Bell said all he saw was one defender — whom he eluded — and the end zone. Bell’s interception return for a touchdown wasn’t just caught but literally snatched out of the air shortly after the ball left the throwing hand of South Central quarterback Jaylen Butts. “I saw the running
