Northern California cities report unusual locust infestations
(FOX40.COM) — Several areas within Northern California have reported an increase in unusual locust or grasshopper activity within the past week, according to Placer County. The species is known as short-horned Melanoplus grasshoppers which is in the locust family. They are a large, robust, long-winged species, and have been detected in Roseville, Lincoln, and West Placer. Experts said when food becomes depleted in the wild, they migrate to surrounding areas and neighborhoods in search of more food. Melanoplus feed off a wide variety of plants; lettuce, beans, corn, carrots, onions residential landscaping and annual flowers.
Motorcyclist dies in accident along Highway 50 in El Dorado County
CAMERON PARK, Calif. — One person is dead after an accident along eastbound Highway 50 Monday evening. The California Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist left Highway 50, east of Cambridge Road, in El Dorado County and hit the guardrail. He died at the scene. Police don't know why the motorcyclist left the roadway.
