AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Poland man accused of shooting a man in the foot at a local gun range was sentenced Wednesday in Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown.

Jan Mazur, 53, was fined $150 on a charge of negligent assault and sentenced to probation for one year. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the victim in the amount of $3,502.64.

The incident happened in November at the Training Range on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown.

When police arrived, the victim was on the floor with a gunshot wound to his foot and was being treated by paramedics.

Mazur told police that he was attempting to make his firearm safe when he pulled the slide back and then heard a loud yell, according to the police report. Mazur said he believes there was some kind of misfire or ricochet that struck the victim, the report stated.
