California high school football team forfeits game amid controversy
On Friday night, Piner High School (Santa Rosa, CA) was scheduled to play Archie Williams (San Anselmo, CA) in what was supposed to be the program's sixth game of the season. Instead, the team was forced to forfeit a day after a student-led walkout at the school following comments the team's captain made earlier in the month. According to a report from Gus Morris of The Press Democrat, the forfeit came because the Prosectors had only five healthy linemen. However, the lack of players likely stemmed from a situation that began earlier in the month. Previously, one of Piner's team captains posted "Free the Cornell 7" to his Instagram regarding the situation where seven Cornell University students were accused of gang raping another Cornell student back in 2024 during a fraternity party. SFGATE reported that the player in question did not attend the team's dinner Thursday night, but it was unclear whether he faced any other consequences. However, students at the school did not feel the player who made the post faced any accountability, leading to the walkout on the same day as the team's next football game. With the forfeit loss, Piner drops to 2-4 and has lost its

Generations of Growth: How a Fremont Preschool Cultivates Community and Inclusivity
In a world where education often feels hurried and impersonal, The Learning Tree Preschool in Fremont stands as a testament to the enduring power of community-driven, play-based learning. Founded in 1980 by a group of visionary women, this preschool was born out of a desire to provide quality childcare in an environment where play and learning coexist harmoniously. Today, it continues to thrive under the stewardship of Alee Capps, a former student who has come full circle to carry on a legacy that has touched countless lives. The Learning Tree's story is intertwined with the lives of its community members, many of whom have walked its halls as children, only to return years later with their offspring. "One of the most meaningful parts is seeing former students return with their own children," Alee shares, her voice filled with pride. The preschool's ability to transcend generations is not just a testament to its educational approach but to the community bonds it has nurtured over the decades.

Misguided school event policies need to be reframed
On Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, Berkeley High School’s varsity football game against Arroyo High School was stopped in the third quarter after multiple fights broke out in the stands. Police promptly responded, and although officers did not find a gun, the Berkeley Fire Department responded as well, assessing at least one person for injuries. In response, BHS principal Juan Raygoza emailed BHS students, families, and the broader community to announce stricter admissions policies for all future home games. BHS students must now present a physical school ID. A strict no-bag policy is to be enforced, tickets must be purchased online, and only students from BHS and the opposing team are allowed to enter.

SFUSD Says Informal Removals Aren’t Allowed, but It Can’t Count Them
San Francisco Unified School District — District at Center of Discipline Policy. San Francisco Unified says sending a student home for discipline without recording a formal suspension is not acceptable. But the district also says it has no system to count how often students are removed informally, according to The San Francisco Standard. That gap is central to a family’s account reported by the Standard: Roberto Guzman Rivera said his 8-year-old son was sent home early and told he would be suspended for the rest of the day, though no formal suspension was recorded.

It’s hot in Oakland classrooms, soon we’ll know just how hot
Most of the Bay Area is under a heat advisory until Thursday evening. And in Oakland, the schools are hot. But leaders there are taking steps to cool classrooms down. This summer, the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) started coating school roofs with reflective paint, building shade structures, removing asphalt, and installing tinted films on windows to reduce solar heat. It’s part of a $12 million district-wide program to cool schools down.

School Spirit Matters More Than You Think
At Dougherty Valley High School, I’ve noticed that not many people participate in school spirit activities. They mostly hear about it from the few students promoting it and then it goes in one ear and out the other. In over 1000 high school students, 75% of students with higher levels of school spirit perform above average academically. That three-quarters majority isn’t just luck, but proof that student belonging and achievement are deeply intertwined. When schools treat sports games, rallies and spirit days as extra, they lose the connection these activities have to students that is so vital for academic success. School spirit matters more than you think and it should be emphasized more by the student body, leadership and staff of DVHS to build a genuine sense of pride and belonging.
