Biz Beat Roundup: New life planned for long-vacant downtown storefront
The Central Virginia Housing Coalition, Virginia Statewide Community Land Trust and Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity have applied for a rezoning in Spotsylvania County that would allow 66 condominiums as part of the Cason’s Mill project on the north side of Courthouse Road 350 feet east of its intersection with Foster Road across from Courthouse Road Elementary School. The units would appear as 33 two-story townhouse units, but the homes being offered would each be one-level condominiums. Tricord Inc. owns the 6.6 acres of land where the project is proposed, and Tricord Principal Mike Jones recently discussed the project on Biz Beat Banter. It’s part of the company’s efforts to create affordable housing in the community.

Code Refresh Reshapes Richmond as VCU Students Struggle to Find Housing
Richmond’s new proposed zoning code could expand development opportunities and reshape how much housing is available to VCU students in Richmond’s competitive market. The city released the third and final draft of the zoning code on Aug. 17 which includes community insight from the Richmond Civic League meeting on July 21. Replacing a 50 year old zoning code, the overhaul alters lot restrictions, increases density along rapid transit lines and restricts non-conforming structures in efforts to expand housing. The code also imposes a complete ban on data center construction within the city.

Best & Worst 2026: News & Personalities
In a country turned upside down by divisive politics, Abigail Spanberger’s election as the first woman governor in Virginia history felt like a reprieve.
