Under-the-radar former Vol competing for starting WR job this summer

A former Tennessee Vols wide receiver who has flown under-the-radar a bit since reaching the NFL is competing for a starting job with the Pittsburgh Steelers this summer.

Former Vols wide receiver Marquez Callaway is battling for the No. 2 wide receiver job in Pittsburgh according to The Athletic's Mark Kaboly.

From The Athletic : It’s the first week, but the WR2 spot is wide open in my eyes. Watkins, Calvin Austin III and Marquez Callaway each did some good things, and Van Jefferson looks steady as hell. Is that enough? Who knows now? If the Steelers don’t add a legitimate veteran No. 2 receiver via trade before the season, the battle in training camp and the preseason will come down to who is the most consistent. That just might be Austin, but don’t count out rookie Roman Wilson. He is quick as a hiccup.

Callaway signed a reserve/futures deal with the Steelers this past January.

The former Vol spent the first three seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints after going undrafted in 2020. Callaway's best season with the Saints came in 2021 when he caught 46 passes for 698 yards and six touchdowns.

The Denver Broncos signed Callaway to a free agent deal after the 2022 season, but they waived the former Vol before the start of the season. Callaway then landed on the Las Vegas Raiders' practice squad, but he was released in October. The Georgia native then signed with the Saints for his second stint with the franchise. Callaway appeared in three games with New Orleans last season.

Callaway's wide receivers coach in Pittsburgh is Zach Azzanni, who recruited Callaway to Tennessee (Azzanni also served as Callaway's wide receivers coach at Tennessee in 2016).
