Steelers insider says recently signed free agent WR was never really in Pittsburgh’s plans

When the Tennessee Titans signed Tyler Boyd to a one year contract a few days ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers last chance at adding a proven veteran to their WR corps vanished.

Instead, Pittsburgh added to their track team by signing a former Super Bowl champion.

But according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic , Boyd hasn’t been in the Steelers' plans for months:

Steelers moved off of Boyd a while ago

“Tyler Boyd wasn’t an option for the past couple of months, to be honest with you. They weren’t interested in him. They had initial interest to see where it was, but they didn’t want to pay him. Tyler wanted more than one year, Kaboly told Joe Stanley of 93.7 The Fan . “Obviously, they don’t have interest in him after the draft. That’s obvious there because of the Roman Wilson thing. They never really were all in on him. They checked in on him. Tried to get him to sign for lesser money. They just didn’t view him as a guy that was a high priority right now.”

This report aligns with many of the Steelers' WR moves and even rumors this offseason. The Steelers addressed the depths of the room with Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and recently Scotty Miller.

They even addressed the slot WR role with Roman Wilson in the draft, all but ending any chance of Boyd joining the team, since that is the primary role he is used in at this point of his career.

hat leaves WR #2 as the only hole left to fill in the WR corps, a role that would have always been rich for Boyd.

But I don’t think this rules out another move and potentially a big one from Pittsburgh. In fact, I think Kaboly’s report shows that Pittsburgh is planning on one more key acquisition.

I know GM Omar Khan and HC Mike Tomlin will say they are comfortable with the WR room, but deep down, they have to add another viable option on the perimeter, with a post-June 1st move potentially on the horizon.
