National Aviary forced to say goodbye to its first penguin, Stanley

The National Aviary on the North side announced the death of its very first penguin, Stanley, on Thursday.

Stanley came to the Aviary in 2001 at only two months old and was named after the NHL’s top prize, the Stanley Cup, which has been won by the Pittsburgh Penguins five times.

An African Penguin, Stanley had been dealing with spine and joint issues due to his advanced age. The team at the Aviary was able to help Stanley through various treatments over the past 18 months but “ultimately (he) was not able to progress in recovery.”

Stanley is survived by his longtime mate, Dottie.
