PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WKBN) – Giant Eagle announced Wednesday that it has expanded its partnership with an app-based marketplace to include customers using SNAP benefits.

Flashfood is an app that connects shoppers with discounts on groceries either in surplus or nearing its best-buy date. Now, shoppers who use Flashfood can use their SNAP benefits through the EBT method of payment.

Deals are available on meat, produce, dairy, bakery and other items. After making the purchase directly on the app, customers can pick up the items in the Flashfood Zone inside Giant Eagle or Market District locations.

Giant Eagle first introduced the Flashfood program at 34 stores in 2021. Following the success of the program pilot, the company made Flashfood available in all corporate Giant Eagle and Market District locations across the chain in 2022.

“Our continued partnership with Flashfood is helping us to better serve our guests by offering significant savings on important grocery options,” said Jannah Jablonowski, Giant Eagle spokesperson. “We are thrilled that Flashfood is now able to accept EBT payment through their app, giving our guests more flexibility to manage their grocery budgets.”

Being able to purchase items that are near their “best buy” date has diverted 3.8 million pounds of food waste from reaching landfills, according to Giant Eagle.

You can find the Flashfood app in the App Store and Google Play.
